How the BMI works
The formula is simple: weight in kg divided by your height in metres squared. For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered a normal weight.
One caveat: BMI does not tell muscle and fat apart. If you carry a lot of muscle, you can land in the "overweight" range with a low body-fat percentage. Treat the number as a starting point, not a goal.
FAQ
Is BMI meaningful for everyone?
No. For athletes with lots of muscle, pregnant people, children and older adults the BMI is only of limited use. It does not replace a medical assessment.
What BMI is normal?
For adults a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal. Below that is underweight, from 25 it is overweight and from 30 it is obese.
