Lose Weight by Walking: The Underrated Lever

You do not have to run to lose weight. The most underrated calorie burner is simply walking.

What NEAT is

NEAT stands for "Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis" – the calories you burn outside of exercise: walking, standing, taking stairs, fidgeting. For many people NEAT makes a bigger difference in daily burn than the workout itself. Best of all: walking barely tires you and does not hurt recovery.

Why walking works so well

A run makes you hungry and costs recovery. A brisk walk burns calories without driving up appetite, and you can repeat it daily. 7,000 to 10,000 steps add up over the week to a solid extra deficit – almost unnoticed.

How to add steps

🚶 Steps that add up

  • On a phone call? Pace while you talk.
  • Walk or cycle short trips instead of driving.
  • Get off one stop early and walk the rest.
  • After meals, head out for 10 minutes – good for digestion and blood sugar.

Steps plus strength = ideal

Walking is the calorie burner, strength training protects your muscle in a deficit. Together they make sure the scale loses fat, not muscle. Cardio sessions are nice, but for most people the combo of lots of steps plus two or three strength sessions a week is more sustainable.
